The meeting in February we found ourselves in 9 to discuss "The circle of fortune and happiness" by Amy Tan. Some people unfortunately do not read it because it failed to find him, the others were good and have read every last page. The book tells the story of four mothers (born in China and then emigrated to America) and their four daughters (born in America) and lends itself to various interpretations because there are several issues: generational conflict and culture; the issue of immigration; the parent-child relationship and the role of women. The mothers leave China to escape difficult situations and arrive in a new country, taking with him a wealth of memories, culture, traditions and would not want to forget that their children were American citizens in every respect, but at the same time maintain a link with their origins. All this led us to reflect on the theme of immigration, about how a current topic in Italy and we then found to take as examples some of those immigrant families who live in our country.
Another important aspect of this book is that it shows us so fictionalized, some aspects of Chinese culture unknown to us. This has gave the idea for a new series of meetings focused on books set in faraway countries, of which we know little. The program is still being drafted, so while we remind you that Amy Tan has concluded a cycle. From next month will begin a new tour that will take us to a second reading by the authors that we have met along our path, or Stendhal, Mann, Nemirovsky and Morante.
